Positions for two Postdoctoral Research Associates for Interdisciplinary Research on Ecology and Sustainability

The newly established Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Ecology and Sustainability (CIRES) at the College of Environmental Studies, National Dong Hwa University, Taiwan is inviting applicants for two Postdoctoral Research Associate positions.

At CIRES we have developed a multi-disciplinary group inspired by organizations such as NCEAS, SESYNC and iDiv. Our mission is to advance research on the resilience of socio-ecological systems in face of global change, facilitating better governance outcomes that take into account environmental, economic and social concerns. Please see the Introduction page of our website for more information on how we aim to achieve this.

The postdoctoral research associates will work with other PIs in the Center to organise up to four working group meetings every year that address critical topics in conservation ecology and sustainability. Together with other members of CIRES, they will lead brainstorming sessions aimed at identifying potential synthesis studies, and coordinate and lead analyses in workshops. They will have the opportunity to network with a large number of international collaborators and author many scientific publications.

The candidates for this position should have a PhD in either ecology, geography, climatology, natural resources, environmental science or a similar field. They must be fluent in spoken and written English, and have a good publication record in English-language, peer-reviewed journals. They will need to display leadership, initiative, problem-solving, and ability to work in a team environment.

Priority will be given to applicants whose research experience has included data-driven synthesis, geospatial analyses, and/or conceptual unification of knowledge as a means to address long-term ecological questions and/or socio-ecological system resilience.

Other favourable characteristics for the positions include:

  • Proficiency with a programming language such as R or Python.
  • Experience in ecosystems modelling, statistical analysis and/or data mining.
  • A strong understanding of terrestrial ecosystems from ecological, physical, and/or social science perspectives.
  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary and multicultural team.

As we are seeking two complementary candidates, we do not expect any one applicant to satisfy all of the above conditions.

The initial contract is for 1 year with the possibility of extending for at least 2 more years, depending on performance. The salary is competitive by Taiwanese standards, and more than enough to live comfortably. It also comes with healthcare coverage (among the best in the world) and other social service benefits. Bonuses will be awarded based on research output.

Taiwan has a high quality of living and stunning natural beauty. The successful candidates will be based in Hualien county, which has numerous possibilities for outdoor pursuits such as hiking, mountaineering and wildlife-watching, and to become familiar with indigenous and multicultural communities. The candidates will also have the opportunity to study and practice Chinese.

The most attractive aspect of these positions is to work at the first research center of its kind in Asia, a unique opportunity to produce novel, high-impact research, influence local and regional policy, and collaborate with experts from around the world.

The deadline for application is April 15th 2020, though applications will be considered until the position is filled, at which time this advertisement will be removed from our website’s Vacancies page. The start date will be from June 1st 2020 (flexible), depending on travel and entry restrictions at the time.

To apply, please submit the following in a single PDF file to Dr. I Fang Sun at ifsun@gms.ndhu.edu.tw:

  • Cover letter describing your research interests and suitability for the role.
  • Curriculum vitae, including a complete list of publications.
  • Copies of certificates and transcripts for graduate studies (masters and PhD).
  • The contact details of three references.
