Taiwan and Nepal

Location: B216, 2nd Floor, College of Environmental Studies, NDHU, Hualien, Taiwan

Press Release:

On Thursday November 14th, 2018, the College of Environmental Studies (CES), National Dong Hwa University (NDHU), Taiwan hosted the First Joint Symposium between Nepal and Taiwan focusing on Natural Resource Management. The meeting brought together stakeholders from Government and Academia who discussed current research and topics ranging from wildlife conservation, to climate change mitigation, and social-ecological systems. The keynote speech was delivered by Dr. Maheshwar Dhakal, Chief Climate Change Management Division, Ministry of Forests and Environment, Nepal, who presented the current state of paradigm shift in biodiversity conservation in Nepal.

The symposium followed a visit to Nepal in 2017 by a delegation of the CES, at which the visiting scholars from NDHU conducted a Seminar on Natural Resource Management and established contacts of mutual interest. The immediate goals succeeding the First Joint Symposium between Nepal and Taiwan are to sign a Memorandum of Understanding between The Ministry of Forests and Environment, Nepal, and NDHU, Taiwan, which is to be accomplished by the end of 2018. Planned are also annual symposia in Nepal and Taiwan, involving established scholars as well as post-graduate students. The long-term goals are to nurture reciprocal relationships, exchange knowledge and expertise, facilitate exchanges of students and scholars, contribute to each other’s progress, and bring about positive change in environmental studies and action as well as nature and wildlife conservation for the benefit of society and our natural environment at large.

With the successful completion of this First Joint Symposium between Nepal and Taiwan, a significant milestone for important environmental cooperation was set. The next imminent milestone is the visit of CES delegation to Nepal this coming December 2018 where various workshops and training programs will be conducted with government officials, academics, and environmental practitioners.
