Title: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly: I, Typhoon, and Research (English Speech)
Speaker: Dr. Huo-Jin Huang (University of North Carolina at Asheville, Asheville, North Carolina, United States)
Time & Date: 10:10-12:00, 19th (Tuesday) , Spetember 2017.
Venue: Room A114 & B119, Environmental Science Building

Abstract:
Typhoons play a significant, powerful role in Taiwan's weather in summer and fall.  The impacts of typhoons are recognized environmentally and societally.  In this general presentation, the structure, dynamics and climatology of typhoons will be discussed.   Specifically, the rainfall patterns caused by typhoons that made landfall to Taiwan during 2007-2016 will be investigated.  It is found that extreme precipitation in Taiwan is not all produced by typhoons.  The rainfall amounts in Taiwan caused by typhoons are usually widespread but asymmetrical.  It should also be noted that rainfall amounts by typhoons depend on many factors, such as location, terrain, geographical features, intensity and moisture content of the typhoon, duration and direction of the typhoon’s movement, and relative distance from the center of the typhoon and relative position to the center of the typhoon.

Footnote:
As a visiting professor from the University of North Carolina at Asheville, I would like to know you, interact with you, and learn from you as much as I could in a short period of time.  In this simple presentation, I would like to introduce myself, to share my understanding about strong tropical cyclones (i.e., typhoons), and to brief what I would like to accomplish in my short-term research at Dong Hwa University.   Although the presentation will be given mainly in English, it should not prevent you from coming.   With the aid of PowerPoint slides and graphics, you would be able to grasp the key points of the presentation; but more importantly, you can simply come and enjoy the presentation.  It will be a learning experience for both of us, and your participation will be greatly appreciated.
